The KKK Gone With WindMorgaine postedCan anyone clear this up for me? It's been a long time since I read this book. "Scarlett regularly drives alone to and from the sawmill, despite being warned against it by acquaintances. One day she is assaulted by a poor white man and his black companion as she drives through the woods near a shanty town. Her former slave, Big Sam, appears and fights off the attackers. To avenge the attack, Frank, Ashley, and local men (part of the Ku Klux Klan), plan to raid the shantytown. Local law enforcement officers find out about the plan and inform Rhett of their plans over a game of cards. During the raid, Ashley is injured and Frank is killed." That's from Wikipedia... I don't remember the main characters being involved in KKK matters... what? additional---------------------- Do I have to hate my racist teacher even more now? Sponsored Link-------------------------- Michael E repliedThe Klan that was around in the 1860s after the War was not the KKK you think of today. Run by figures such as Nathan Forrest , it was devoted mostly to fending off carpetbagger attacks, unfair taxing and evictions of Southern residents. When it became more racist and violent, it was disbanded as it was seen to be detrimental to the South and only continuing the Federal occupation. It was not revived until 1915, after the racist movie "Birth of a Nation" was released. Thats that racist klan you think of today ~~Huntresss~~ repliedIts been more than 15 years since I read this book but from what i recall the scene as you describe it did happen. I am going to go research it and let you know exactly where it happens. things like this do happen in a lot of stories its to help show us how terrible things could be in the name of what's right. I think a similar scene happened in North and South. EDIT: Throughout all of PART 4 they discuss or mention intermittently the KKK...and the Yankee's who kill for little to no reason...but the scene above that you've asked about starts around page 432. i♥sf repliedMichael E is right, the KKK as it existed after the Civil War was more of a general rebel/insurrection force designed to resist the power takeover by the Union's politicos. It would be squashed by 1870, but revived in 1915 with a new purpose in mind.
