Can I change heads horsepower Will I hurt motorTom F postedI have a low compression (7.6 to 1) pontiac 400ci motor and is rated only at 170hp and right now runs perfectly. I wanted to make some changes to bring the HP up but want to make sure I don't screw things up.. Can anyone recomend bolt in type stuff to make HP? I don't want to tear down and rebuild... Thanks. additional---------------------- It is a 1974 motor, I am not going to add a supercharger, get real! Noone has anwered my question.. can I change heads??? What if I changed the cam and added a 4bbl carb? Sponsored Link-------------------------- Todd H repliedAn old bottom end and new heads is not a good idea. Why don't you try going fuel injected... Texas repliedI'm guessing you're talking about late '70s or early '80s vehicle. If it runs nice now I'd just leave it alone and be happy with it. The cheapest stuff to do to help HP a little is to have dual exhaust with cross-over pipe and headers... this is easier to talk about if this is old enough it doesn't have to have a cat on it. A good set of plug wires like Magnacor will help make sure you got good spark through the rpm range. http://www.magnecor.com/ And K&N Filtercharger help a bit on the intake side http://www.knfilters.com/ P'rushim replied...it gets a lot deeper then just Heads... "cam", rods, lifters, valves... get some advise from a good "Rod" shop first. Ray G repliedyou can do the heads but i wouldn't start there i would add an intake manifold 4bbl carb and headers and maybe a cam if you go much farther then that you will have to get into the bottom end biketrailer3000 repliedsimple bolt ons would probably be adding a cold air intake or short ram. Also get a header with a cat-back exhaust system. there are many companies for cat-back exhausts such as, greddy, apexi, HKS, DC Sports, SKUNK2, Tanabe, Flowtech and much more. each has their own unique sound so check out some youtube videos. same thing goes for headers DC Sports, Edelbrock, Greddy are some of the companies. just look at the design. If it's either a 4-1 or a 4-2-1 design. 4-1 is for more top end power, and 4-2-1 is for a mid-rrange power output for the cold air intake AEM, INGEN, SPECTRE are reliable ones other bolt-ons you can do is change spark plugs(NGK iridium),spark plug wires(Magnecore), and maybe a new distributor. also consider a new radiator as they can cool your engine more than 30% over your stock one, KOYO, Mushimoto,ARC are a few companies as well. Get pressure caps for your radiator and your engine oil, which would dress up your engine bay and keep the fluids from bursting out hope this helped out kelly_f_1999 repliedtry typing in pontiac preformance parts or pontiac preformance forum and talk with others who have same Robert D repliedYou have a low compression motor, a turbo charger is the easiest way to do this. Head modification is second best. If the mileage is high, I would leave it alone, the crank takes will take on the new increased demand.
