A questions caring chinchillatatertotz711 postedhi i am looking into buying a chinchilla. i have done some research and i have a few questions. 1. how often should you give your chinchilla a dust bath? 2. how much dust should you put in the dust bath? 3. which is better, a water bowl or a drip container (the ones that hook up to the side of the cage) 4. do their nails need to be trimmed? 5. should you spay or neuter your chinchilla? sorry, that might be too much but please answer as many as possible thanks additional---------------------- just one more question, -- is it alright if you would keep a chinchilla in a tank rather than a cage? thanks again Sponsored Link-------------------------- dezzy replied1. how often should you give your chinchilla a dust bath? About 2 to 3 times a week 2. how much dust should you put in the dust bath? No more then about 1-2 inches 3. which is better, a water bowl or a drip container (the ones that hook up to the side of the cage) A dust house would better so that the dust won't get everywhere 4. do their nails need to be trimmed? Chinchillas don't have nails so there's no need for that. 5. should you spay or neuter your chinchilla? Never spay or neuter a chinchilla. It doesn't change its behavior or lifespan in anyway so there's no point in wasting your money. sorry, that might be too much but please answer as many as possible thanks 6. Never put a chinchilla in a tank. A cage is wayyyyyy better. Hope I was of some help to you. If you need anymore advice feel free to ask I would love to help. maschicky replieddusts baths should be given three times a week. your package of "pet dust" should explain how much to put in! the drip water feeder and bowl equal out about the same. the bowl is easier to get to, but while doing many activities bedding might get in the water bowl. drip holders are clean and convenient, but are harder for them do get water out of. i believe their nails do need to be clipped, see an exotics vet. i don't think it would be worth the money ( not to mention the pains for the little chinchilla!!), just get two of the same gender. i wouldn't recommend a tank..cages are probably the better way to go ( for circulation) good luck! {courtney} replied1. When you're done touching and holding him. The point is to wash the oils off his fur. 2. About an inch. Too much is a waste, too little doesn't do much. 3. Container. The bowl tips over and gets bedding and other stuff flicked in. Get a drip container (water bottle) that doesn't have a heavy ball in the nozzle so its easier to drink from. 4. Don't trim them, it can hurt. File their nails every few moths if you don't want to be scratched! 5. No, its not necessary, but if you get two males, or a male and female you should. But fatality is a high risk, since they are so small and delicate. 6. No, no, no. Do NOT get a tank the need a lot of levels to jump on and a lot of space, which there aren't large enough tanks. Also, tanks have very poor ventilation for tiny little lungs. Lian K repliedQ#3. I think that a water bowl would be better because that is how they naturally drink unless you are tight on space, then use a drip container. and I think that you should keep your chinchilla in a cage because a tank would have no grip on the sides. hope i helped!
